Born to Estelle and Edward Lang in New York City, Herbert H. Lang (1921-2006) served in the United States Navy during World War II. After the war, he enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin, receiving his PhD in history in 1954. Lang taught at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in Socorro, New Mexico, until he became a faculty member at Texas A & M University in 1956. Historian, lawyer, politician and soldier Henderson King Yoakum was born in Claiborne County, Tennessee, in 1810 and graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1832. The following year, he married Evaline Cannon, with whom he fathered nine children, and began practicing law in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
